Fit begins with a usable base pattern

Pattern making gives an abaya its proportions; grading turns those proportions into a size range customers can understand. Start with the intended silhouette—straight, flowing, open-front, belted, batwing, or structured—and define the wearing ease, length, sleeve shape, opening, and coverage before drawing the base. A pattern copied from a photograph cannot explain how the garment should move or where the measurement points belong.

Measure the design, not just the body

Create a garment measurement chart with points such as centre-back length, front length, chest or sweep, shoulder, sleeve length, cuff opening, and front opening. For a wide abaya, sweep and movement may matter more than a close chest measurement. State whether measurements are taken flat, along a seam, or around the garment. Add tolerances and identify the approved sample size. This gives the factory and customer-facing team the same language.

Check the base on a person or form. Walk, reach, sit, and raise the arms. Observe whether the sleeve pulls, the side seam swings, the opening overlaps as intended, or the hem becomes uneven when the wearer moves. For a decorated abaya, place the artwork on the pattern before grading so the motif does not drift into a seam or disappear at the edge.

Grade with the silhouette in mind

Grading is not simply adding the same amount everywhere. A sleeve, shoulder, opening, and hem may require different changes to preserve proportion and movement. A wide sleeve can become excessive in a larger size if its growth is not controlled; a narrow cuff can become uncomfortable in a smaller size if its opening is reduced mechanically. Decide which lines stay stable and which expand, then test at least a smaller and larger size in addition to the base.

Record grade rules or measured results, pattern revision, seam allowance, grain, notches, and construction notes. Mark left and right pieces, lining relationships, closure positions, and placement references. If a brand offers custom length or multiple height options, document how those variations affect hem, sleeve, and decoration rather than mixing them into one vague size label.

A fit approval checklist

Compare each test size for length, sweep, sleeve balance, shoulder, opening, ease, symmetry, and movement. Inspect the garment after pressing and after careful folding. Ask a reviewer who was not in the original fitting to read the chart and identify each measurement point. Any question they cannot answer is a pattern-file gap.

Scaling without losing the signature

Consistent fit is what allows a collection to grow without turning every size into a new experiment.
